Our Roots: Born in the Craft Capital

Indicum’s journey is deeply tied to Jaipur—a city built on a rich heritage of craft patronage, where generational artisans turned hand-block printing into a timeless art form. Rooted in this historic landscape, Indicum was founded on an unwavering devotion to the purity of the craft and the legacy of the Chhipa community.

A Humble Beginning

From a 4x4 Table

The story began in 1980, when Nahru Lal Chhipa laid the foundation of Indicum with nothing more than a single 4x4 printing table and an enduring vision. Building upon that spark, Master Bharu Lal Chhipa took the craft forward, refining block printing techniques and introducing Jaipur’s authentic artistry to a wider market through sheer skill and dedication.

Four Generations

Craftsmanship

Over the decades, the family’s heritage evolved into an enduring enterprise. Under the vision of Prahlad Ray Chhipa, Indicum expanded into global markets in 1994, taking traditional Indian block prints to clients worldwide. Today, the mantle is carried forward by the fourth generation, Ajay and Jay, who blend time-honored artisanal methods with contemporary sensibilities while staying true to their family’s foundational ethos.

Nature

As the Color Palette

At the heart of Indicum is a profound commitment to sustainable, natural processes. Rejecting synthetic shortcuts, our colors are derived directly from the earth:

  • Fermented iron and jaggery for deep blacks
  • Pure turmeric for vibrant, earthy yellows
  • Natural lime and mineral mud for traditional dabu resists and soft tones
  • Plant extracts, alum, and nature-derived mordants to set long-lasting prints

Every meter of fabric is hand-printed and hand-dyed, celebrating the organic variations that make authentic handmade textiles unique.

Craft

Over Mass Production

We believe in thoughtful curation over bulk manufacturing. Indicum operates on a conscious, small-batch production philosophy where quality, ethical workmanship, and fabric longevity always take precedence over volume. Every collection reflects four decades of accumulated mastery—honoring the past, nurturing artisan livelihoods, and delivering mindful design to a discerning global audience.
